Episode 6: A Fiery Comeback
📅 Start Time: January 24, 2025, at 11:28 p.m.
📅 End Time: January 25, 2025, at 12:36 p.m.
After a short pause, Kīlauea erupted once again on January 24, sending lava fountain-fed flows across Halemaʻumaʻu Crater. The eruption built in intensity throughout the evening, with sporadic lava spattering beginning at 6:00 p.m. before turning into sustained fountaining just before midnight.
By morning, the eruption began to wane, and activity paused at 12:36 p.m., after covering nearly half the crater floor in lava.
🔥 Episode 6 Highlights:
✔ Lava fountains surged up to 100 feet (30 meters).
✔ Fresh lava flows spread across Halemaʻumaʻu Crater.
✔ The north vent continued to glow, signaling magma remained near the surface.
Scientists warned that another eruption could follow soon—and they were right.
Episode 7: Lava Returns Just Days Later
📅 Start Time: January 27, 2025, at 6:41 p.m.
📅 End Time: January 28, 2025, at 10:47 a.m.
Just two days later, Kīlauea erupted again, with small lava spatters appearing around 1:30 p.m. before erupting into sustained lava fountains by 6:41 p.m.
By 7:40 p.m., fountains from the north vent reached heights of 200 feet, sending lava streaming across the crater. A smaller eruption also occurred at the south vent, adding even more molten rock to the landscape.
🌋 Episode 7 Highlights:
✔ Lava covered nearly 50% of the crater floor.
✔ SO₂ gas emissions reached 1,000 tons per day, impacting air quality.
✔ Windblown Pele’s Hair (volcanic glass strands) was reported across Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park.
Scientists believe Episode 8 could begin between February 1–3, 2025 as the summit continues to inflate.
